The core tests are Complete Blood Count (CBC), blood sugar (fasting/PP) and HbA1c, lipid profile, liver function test (LFT), kidney function test (KFT), thyroid profile (T3, T4, TSH) and urine routine. Vitamin D, B12 and ECG are commonly added.
Fast for 10–12 hours (only water allowed) for blood sugar fasting and lipid profile tests. CBC, thyroid and HbA1c do not strictly need fasting. Avoid alcohol and heavy fatty meals the day before, and continue regular medicines unless your doctor advises otherwise.
Generally desirable values are total cholesterol below 200 mg/dL, LDL below 100 mg/dL, HDL above 40 mg/dL (men) or 50 mg/dL (women), and triglycerides below 150 mg/dL. Your doctor may set lower targets if you have diabetes or heart disease.
HbA1c below 5.7% is normal, 5.7%–6.4% indicates prediabetes, and 6.5% or above indicates diabetes. It reflects your average blood sugar over the past 2–3 months and does not require fasting.
Routine tests like CBC, sugar, lipid, thyroid, LFT and KFT are usually reported the same day. Specialised tests may take 24–72 hours. Reports are issued by an NABL-accredited lab.
