There is no difference, sonography and ultrasound (USG) are the same test. Both use high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of organs. It is painless, radiation-free and safe for all ages, including pregnant women.

Yes. All sonography scans are performed by Dr. Sabah Aquil, a female radiologist with 20 years of experience, trained at Nanavati Hospital. Women patients feel comfortable for pelvic, breast and pregnancy scans.

For abdominal sonography, fast for 6–8 hours (water is allowed in small amounts). For pelvic and early pregnancy scans, drink 4–5 glasses of water an hour before and don't pass urine so the bladder is full. No preparation is needed for thyroid, breast or Doppler scans.

Whole abdomen sonography checks the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder, and uterus/ovaries or prostate. It can detect fatty liver, gallstones, kidney stones, cysts, swelling of organs, fluid in the abdomen and many causes of abdominal pain.

Typical pregnancy scans are a dating/viability scan at 6–9 weeks, NT scan at 11–14 weeks, anomaly (level 2) scan at 18–22 weeks, and growth scans with Doppler in the third trimester. Sonography is safe for mother and baby.

An NT (nuchal translucency) scan measures fluid at the back of the baby's neck to assess the risk of chromosomal conditions like Down syndrome. It is done between 11 weeks and 13 weeks 6 days of pregnancy. A measurement below about 3 mm is generally considered normal.

A follicular study is a series of transvaginal scans that track egg (follicle) growth to predict ovulation. It usually starts on day 9–10 of the cycle and is repeated every 1–3 days until ovulation. It is mostly painless and helps plan natural conception, IUI or IVF.

A Doppler scan is a special ultrasound that shows blood flow in arteries and veins. It is used to detect blood clots (DVT), varicose veins, narrowed arteries, and to check the baby's blood supply in pregnancy. It is painless and takes 20–40 minutes.
